WIC Nutritionist

The William F. Ryan Community Health Network is a group of not-for-profit, federally qualified health centers that delivers high quality, affordable and comprehensive medical care to diverse and underserved communities. We are currently seeking a WIC Nutritionist for our Ryan Women and Children’s Center located on the Upper West Side of Manhattan.

Position Overview:
Provide nutrition assessment and education to WIC participants, and serve as a resource for staff, health care team, and the community in the area of nutrition. This work is carried out in support of the mission and goals of the Ryan Network.

Essential Functions:

  • Interview participants using participant-centered skills, and assess nutritional status based on anthropometric, hematological and other medical information provided by the participants and medical providers to determine all appropriate New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) risk criteria for WIC Program eligibility.
  • Determine if participants have nutritional risks that are designated to be high-risk criteria, and provide appropriate medical nutrition therapy intervention at certification and nutrition education appointments.
  • Maintain all participant charts according to NYSDOH WIC Program guidelines, including medical referral forms and medical documentation forms. Ensure that all participants have received WIC orientation and are familiar with WIC program policies and procedures.
  • Effectively utilize all skills required by the NYSDOH to operate the WICSIS Program, and follow all updated NYSDOH directives and builds.
  • Screen all participants to determine when hematology services are required according to NYSDOH and comply with Center policies and procedures if blood is to be drawn on site.
  • Promote breastfeeding initiation and increase breastfeeding duration rates through individual instruction and group education. Support the Breastfeeding Peer Counselor Program and Breast Pump Program by actively supporting and promoting breastfeeding and making appropriate referrals to the Breastfeeding Coordinator and Peer Counselors, as well as assessing need and issuing breast pumps to participants when appropriate.
  • Increase awareness of the consequences of smoking and substance abuse in WIC Participants, offering referrals as needed.
  • Develop and personalize nutrition education according to the needs of families served using participant-centered techniques, assuring availability of appropriate multi-lingual educational materials, and regularly providing facilitated group discussions with participants.
  • Document all nutrition education sessions, group or individual, in WICSIS. Develop and maintain high-risk care plans in WICSIS, closing them when high-risk criteria no longer apply.
  • Collect and maintain daily logs of participants served, and submit logs for program evaluation and management. Perform quality improvement activities for as required.
  • Keep abreast of new WIC Program policies and procedures, as well as new developments in nutrition and health by attending NYSDOH and Center meetings, conferences and trainings. Maintain and be knowledgeable of all pertinent NYS WIC Local Agency Memos and policies.
  • Conduct inreach/outreach and nutrition workshops within the Center and in the community as needed.
  • Refer WIC participants to other departments within the Center or other community agencies as appropriate, and document all referrals in WICSIS, serving as a reliable nutrition information resource for health care practitioners in the community. Serve as part of the Ryan Center and Ryan-NENA health care team.
  • Immediately report any problems or unusual occurrences.
  • Demonstrate the nutrition knowledge and skills necessary to provide nutritional assessment and
    interventions appropriate to the age and needs of the participant served.

  • Maintain kitchen/waiting area used for food demonstrations.
  • Other duties and/or projects as assigned.

    Minimum Experience and Skills Required:

  • 2+ years of WIC experience
  • Experience in Clinical and Community Nutrition
  • Strong command of MS Word and Outlook

Education, Licenses, and/or Certifications Required:

  • Master’s Degree in Nutrition

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Registered Dietitian/Nutritionist (RDN) highly preferred
  • Bilingual Spanish/English strongly preferred

Minimal Training Time
Probationary period consisting of three months of actual work days.

Job Hazards
Work conditions inherent in ambulatory health care and outreach settings. Some traveling to various community sites required. Flexible work schedule may include evenings or weekends.
