The first day of school is Thursday, September 5, and there are some new requirements for all students entering New York City Public Schools that parents should know about.

Enroll Your Child Today at One of Our School-Based Health Centers for Services This School Year

Students can enroll for care at our School-Based Health Centers (SBHC) at no cost. We provide basic exams, physicals, vaccines, reproductive health services, and urgent care as needed. SBHCs are a lifesaver for busy parents and caregivers because students receive healthcare right in the school. Parents don’t need to take time off from work, and students get the care they need right where they are every day. Our SBHCs are in these schools:

If you have insurance, please fill out the insurance section. This is how Ryan Health gets reimbursed for providing our healthcare services. Regardless of your insurance status, YOU WILL NOT HAVE A CO-PAY, and YOU WILL NOT RECEIVE A BILL.

What’s New at Ryan Health’s School-Based Health Centers

We’re always upgrading services at our SBHCs. For this school year, we have increased capacity at each of our schools by adding more mental health providers. We offer individual and group therapy for students ages 5 to 19 and workshops for teachers, administrators, and parents. We prioritize students' autonomy and privacy while providing comprehensive mental health support. Our culturally competent staff ensures that diverse perspectives are considered in delivering effective care.

What You’ll Need For School Registration in NYC Schools

The New York City Department of Education produced a Registration Checklist that outlines what you’ll need to register a new student. These include:

  • Proof of your child’s age
  • Their immunization records
  • Their latest report card/transcript
  • Two documents verifying proof of address

A complete list of those documents is available in 10 languages. You’ll find that list and the Registration Form HERE.

Physicals

If your child is starting school for the first time they are required to have a physical examination. Ryan Health and our School-Based Health Centers can conduct this exam, which should cover the following:

  • Medical history
  • Height
  • Weight
  • Body Mass Index
  • Vision
  • Blood pressure
  • Nutritional evaluation
  • Dental exam
  • Developmental assessment
  • Hearing
  • Immunizations

You can schedule this appointment email school@ryanhealth.org.

Immunizations

New York State Public Health Law requires that students receive certain vaccines in order to attend school. These requirements have been updated for the 2024-2025 school year. Vaccine doses vary by grade level. Your Ryan Health provider can review your child’s vaccination history with you. Vaccines are for potentially serious and contagious conditions such as:

  • Diphtheria, tetanus, and pertussis (DTaP)
  • Polio
  • Measles, mumps and rubella (MMR)
  • Hepatitis B
  • Varicella (chicken pox)
  • Meningococcal conjugate (MenACWY)
  • Haemophilus influenzae type b conjugate (Hib)
  • Pneumococcal conjugate (PCV)
  • Influenza (flu)
